How backlinks work

The PageRank concept underlying Google treats a link as one site voting for another. The more
authoritative sites link to a page, the higher its PageRank and, as a consequence, its position in
the results.

Other search engines apply the same logic through their own authority metrics, and all of them run
algorithmic filters against purchased links. The difference between engines is in the aggressiveness
of those filters rather than in the principle.

What makes a link valuable

Factor Influence
Authority of the referring domain (DR/DA) High — a link from a strong site passes more weight
Topical relevance High — a link from a relevant resource beats an off-topic one
Position on the page Medium — links in the main content beat footer or sidebar links
Anchor text Medium — an exact anchor strengthens the signal, but repetitive anchors look unnatural
follow / nofollow Direct — follow passes PageRank; nofollow does not, though the mention still has value

Links in e-commerce: what is different

Link strategies are harder in e-commerce than in media: product and category pages rarely attract
links organically. The approaches that work:

  • Data and research. Publishing original statistics about the market or about shopper behaviour
is one of the best ways to earn links from media and trade blogs.
  • PR and brand mentions. Track unlinked brand mentions, using Ahrefs or a media-monitoring
tool, and ask for a link to be added.
  • Partner integrations. Joint case studies with suppliers and vendors often produce links from
    relevant B2B resources.
  • Manufacturer brand pages. If you are an authorised dealer, ask the manufacturer to link to
    your catalogue.

Important: buying links breaks search engine guidelines. When an unnatural link profile is
detected, manual penalties are possible, and lifting one is considerably harder than escaping an
algorithmic filter.

Monitoring the link profile

Check the profile regularly through Ahrefs, Semrush or the Links report in Google Search Console.
Watch for:

  • Abnormal link growth over a short period
  • A high share of exact-match anchors carrying commercial keywords
  • Links from sites blocked from indexing or showing signs of spam
