What AI citability is and why it matters
Someone asking an assistant which personalization platform suits e-commerce receives a synthesised
answer and, most often, does not click further. If that answer does not mention your brand, you do
not exist for that person.
AI citability is the metric that answers one question: how often does your content or brand appear
in generative answers for relevant queries?
How it is measured
Citability = answers with a mention / all answers for target queries × 100%
Example: 30 answers with a mention out of 100 queries → citability = 30%
A workable monitoring process:
- Build a list of target questions — problem questions, not brand ones
- Ask them regularly across several AI platforms
- Record the mention, the citation or the link
- Track the trend
What drives citability
| Factor | Influence |
|---|---|
| Explicit definitions and claims | High — easy for a model to extract and cite |
| Data and numbers | High — specific facts beat generalities |
| FAQ structure on pages | High — direct answers to questions |
| References from other authoritative sources | High — an authority signal |
| Domain authority metrics | Medium — relevant but not dominant |
| Keyword density | Low — models read meaning, not keywords |
Citability versus search position
These are different metrics with partial overlap. AI Overviews correlates in part with the organic
top five; other AI engines use independent indexes. The strategy runs on both tracks at once:
classical SEO for the search position, structured authoritative content for citability.
Tip: start with an audit — ask 20 to 30 of your key questions in the main assistants and note
whether you appear. That gives a baseline benchmark in about two hours.
