What AEO is and where it came from
Search increasingly answers rather than directs. Someone asks which phone to choose within a budget
and receives a direct answer in the results page, with no need to visit a site. Answer engine
optimization is the discipline that asks: how do you make your content that answer?
The term appeared with the spread of featured snippets and voice assistants, well before generative
chat. Today AEO is part of the broader discipline of generative engine optimization, which extends
the same principles to LLM-driven search.
Where AEO applies
| Channel | Format |
|---|---|
| Featured snippet | A text block, list or table at position zero |
| People also ask | Expandable question and answer blocks in the results |
| Voice assistants | A spoken answer, often read aloud |
| AI Overviews | A synthesised answer citing its sources |
| Perplexity, ChatGPT Search | Answers with sources in AI search engines |
The core tactics
Definition first: give a clear answer in the first sentence under the heading. Engines take the
opening paragraph for the snippet.
Structured content: lists, tables and numbered steps are processed better than dense prose. For
voice, short self-contained answers matter most.
FAQ markup: Schema.org FAQPage explicitly signals that the page holds question and answer pairs
suited to direct display.
Tip: write for the questions people actually ask rather than for keywords. How to reduce the
bounce rate of an online store is AEO; bounce rate reduction is classical SEO.
Where AEO ends and GEO begins
AEO emerged as optimisation for direct answers in traditional search and voice assistants. GEO
extended it to generative engines, where the answer is synthesised from many sources rather than
lifted from one. The principles overlap — authority, clarity, structure. The difference is that GEO
adds requirements around citability, data density and the diversity of sources referencing a brand.
