What AI Overviews is

In May 2024 Google launched AI Overviews — a block at the very top of the results page where its
model generates a summary answer drawing on several sources. The feature was previously called the
Search Generative Experience and was available only through Labs.

It is not simply a featured snippet: AI Overviews synthesises an answer across sources, often
without direct quotation, and offers links as further reading. The person gets the answer on the
search page and frequently stays there.

The effect on traffic

Situation Effect on traffic
Your site is cited as a source Possible gain in brand traffic and trust
Your site is not cited Lower click-through on that query
The query is informational A strong click-through decline
The query is transactional Less impact — shopping placements remain

Important: AI Overviews appears predominantly on informational queries rather than
transactional ones. For e-commerce it is not a direct threat to sales, but it affects the top of
the funnel — awareness and consideration.

How to optimise for it

The principles coincide with GEO generally:

  • Explicit definitions — a clear answer in the first two sentences under a heading
  • Data and facts — specific numbers over general statements
  • E-E-A-T signals — expert authorship, references from authoritative sources
  • Structured markup — Schema.org FAQ, Article, HowTo
  • Relevance to the question — the page must answer that query rather than describe the topic

Monitoring

To track where AI Overviews appears for your queries, use Search Console filtered by result type, or
the rank-tracking tools that now report the presence of AI blocks for key queries over time.
