What Web MCP is

Web MCP is the application of the MCP protocol to the web. Sites and web services
give AI agents standardised access to their content and actions through MCP, instead of leaving the
agent to read a page that was laid out for a person. The same label covers web search MCP — a
single web search interface for an agent.

Why it is needed

Scraping: the agent parses HTML -> brittle, breaks on any restyle
Web MCP: the agent calls a standard interface -> reliable and versionable

The agent receives programmatic access rather than a raw page: find a product, compare options, add
to the basket — predictably, and with no dependency on the markup. That matters because a retailer
redesigns a category page far more often than it changes an API contract, and every redesign would
otherwise break every agent reading the site.

The link to agentic commerce

Web MCP is part of the infrastructure of agentic commerce: for AI
agents to buy on a user’s behalf, they need reliable access to store catalogues. It works together
with agentic purchase protocols — YCP (Yandex Commerce Protocol) among them — and
with the interactive UI layer, MCP Apps.
