What MCP Apps are

MCP Apps is an extension of the MCP protocol that lets an MCP server return to the agent not only data but an interactive interface. Instead of a textual answer, the AI agent shows the user a complete component — a product card, a form, a selection widget — right inside the conversation.

How it changes the interaction

Plain MCP: the agent receives data -> answers with text
MCP Apps: the agent receives data + UI -> shows an interactive component

A conversation with an AI stops being text-only. The assistant can display an interactive storefront, let the shopper change product options and complete an order without sending them off to a separate interface.

Why it matters for e-commerce

MCP Apps are one of the building blocks of agentic commerce: the purchase happens inside the conversation with an AI assistant. The direction is young and still forming around the MCP ecosystem — the adjacent direction on the web is described by the term Web MCP.
