What UTM parameters are

UTM parameters (Urchin Tracking Module) are values added to a URL so that an analytics platform can
tell where a visitor came from. The parameter does not change the page — it only carries the
context of the visit.

https://example.com/sale/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc
  &utm_campaign=summer_sale&utm_content=discount_20

Google Analytics (GA4) and most other analytics platforms read these parameters automatically,
which makes UTM tagging a precondition for measuring any paid or email traffic.

The five standard parameters

Parameter What it carries Example
utm_source The source of the visit google, facebook, newsletter
utm_medium The traffic type cpc, email, banner
utm_campaign The campaign summer_sale
utm_content The ad or creative discount_20
utm_term The keyword buy_running_shoes

The first two are mandatory: without utm_source and utm_medium the visit lands in the
“undefined source” bucket. utm_content and utm_term matter when you need to reach the level of
a specific ad.

Tagging rules

  • One shared dictionary of values. google, Google and google.com are three different
sources in a report. Agree the spelling once and write it down.
  • Lower case only, no spaces. Use an underscore as the separator.
  • Do not tag internal links. UTM on internal navigation breaks the original session and
    reassigns the source.
  • Keep tagged URLs out of the index. Parameters multiply duplicates, so you need a correct
rel=canonical without parameters, and tagged links must not enter the sitemap.
  • Check your redirects. If a redirect trims query parameters, the tags are lost and the traffic
    reappears as direct.

UTM and attribution

UTM parameters supply the raw data; the attribution model decides
how the value of a conversion is split across the tagged touches. That is where the familiar
discrepancy comes from: the ad account counts using its own model and its own window, the analytics
platform uses another. This is not a tagging error but a difference in counting rules — reports
have to be compared with the attribution window in mind.

UTM beyond analytics: personalising the traffic

Most often the parameters are used after the fact, in reports. But they can be read at the moment
of the click and used to change the site to match the advertising context: showing the continuation
of the offer from the ad, the relevant category, the promotion and
product recommendations tied to the specific creative.

The logic is simple: bids and creatives are optimised up to the click, and after the click all the
traffic from every campaign meets the same screen. The gap between the advertising promise and the
first screen is lost conversion on traffic you have already paid for — and therefore a lower
ROAS.

Common errors

  • Inconsistent values — the single most common source of noise in channel reports.
  • Tags on internal links — they distort the source and inflate the share of paid traffic.
  • Parameters lost on redirect — advertising traffic turns up as direct.
  • Tagging with no structure — if utm_campaign is called test1, test2, the report is
    unreadable six months later.
