The problem a deferred deep link solves

The classic scenario: someone sees an ad for a specific product, taps it, is sent to the App Store or
Google Play, installs the app and — the home screen opens. The product is nowhere. The context is
gone.

That matters most in e-commerce: the person was in a buying mindset but lost the entry point at the
moment of installation. A deferred deep link carries the context across that gap.

How it works technically

The provider (AppsFlyer, Branch, Adjust) implements the mechanism in several steps:

  1. The person taps the link → the provider stores the parameters plus a device fingerprint
  2. The person goes to the App Store or Google Play → installs the app
  3. At first launch, the provider SDK inside the app asks whether any parameters are waiting for this
    device
  4. The provider returns the stored parameters → the app opens the right screen

On iOS, after the introduction of ATT (App Tracking Transparency), fingerprinting is restricted,
which reduced the accuracy of the method. Providers compensate through SKAdNetwork and aggregated
signals.

Where deferred deep links matter in e-commerce

Campaign Without a deferred deep link With a deferred deep link
An ad for a specific product The home screen opens The advertised product page opens
A referral programme The new user lands in an empty app The referral bonus or promo code is visible at once
An email selection for a new user Install → the home screen Install → the personal selection
Remarketing at first install The context is reset The person continues from what they tapped

Limitations

Fingerprint matching is not 100% accurate. When the device, the IP address or the browser
changes, a match is not guaranteed. Providers typically report 85–95% accuracy in conditions without
ATT.

Parameter storage is time-limited. For most providers it is 7–30 days by default. A long path —
a click, then an install a month later — will not work.

Dependence on a third-party SDK. iOS and Android updates can change SDK behaviour. Firebase
Dynamic Links has announced its deprecation — a live example of providers leaving the market.

Tip: even without a deferred deep link, personalize onboarding using the install source
parameters — channel and campaign. It partly compensates for the lost context: someone who arrived
from a running-shoe ad sees the footwear category rather than the home screen.
