The elements of a listing and their weight

A store listing is everything a user sees before installing. In the App Store people decide in
three to seven seconds whether to download. Most never read the description at all.

Screenshots: the first three decide everything

App Store search results show the first two or three screenshots. Their job is not to display the
interface but to communicate value:

  • First screenshot: the headline value — “Delivery in two hours” in large type over the
    interface
  • Second and third: the key scenarios — catalogue, personalization, checkout
  • The rest: social proof and specific features

The standard mistake is screenshots with no captions, just interface screens. The user will not
understand what they are looking at.

Localising the listing

For an e-commerce business with an audience across several countries, localisation is a priority.
The App Store shows the page in the language of the user’s device when a translation exists.
Localised screenshots in the user’s own language convert substantially better than the English
originals.

A/B testing the listing

The Google Play Console provides store listing experiments for A/B testing the icon, screenshots
and short description. App Store Connect offers an equivalent in product page optimisation. It is a
rarely used but powerful way to raise the conversion rate of organic traffic without changing the
app itself.

Tip: refresh screenshots periodically for seasonal events such as the new year or Black
Friday. Fresh visuals signal an actively maintained app and can lift conversion during
high-traffic periods.
