Upsell vs cross-sell
The two main levers for raising AOV are often confused:
| Upsell | Cross-sell | |
|---|---|---|
| What is offered | A more expensive or better version | A complementary product |
| Example | iPhone 15 → iPhone 15 Pro | iPhone 15 + case + AirPods |
| Effect on AOV | +10–20% | +8–15% |
| Best placement | PDP | Cart, checkout |
Where to place an upsell
Upsell performance depends heavily on placement:
- PDP (product page) — a “similar, but better” or “upgraded version” block. The shopper has
not made the final call yet, which gives the highest switching potential. - Cart — a block above the checkout button. The shopper is already motivated to buy, so a
small upgrade lands well. - Add-to-cart pop-up — more aggressive, but it works for categories with a short decision cycle.
Rules for an effective upsell
- Price ceiling: an upsell offer should not exceed the current product by more than 25–30%.
An option that costs twice as much is more likely to scare the shopper off than to convince them. - Justify the value: show what is actually better about the suggested option — storage,
material, warranty. - No more than two or three alternatives: too much choice paralyses the decision (the paradox
of choice). - Test it: upsell performance varies sharply by category. An A/B test is the only way to find
the optimum.
