What PDP CR shows

PDP CR (product detail page conversion rate) is the percentage of product page visitors who press
“add to cart”. The metric answers one question: how persuasive is this page?

Typical reference points (they vary substantially by niche):
– Fashion: 5–15% — a wide spread, driven by sizing and colour choice
– Electronics: 10–25% — shoppers arrive looking for a specific product
– FMCG / grocery: 25–45% — high repeat rate, low barrier

What drives PDP CR

Page content is the biggest lever:

Element Impact What to do
Number of photos High 5–8 shots from different angles; video is a bonus
Presence of reviews Very high Target 10+ reviews per SKU, rating of 4.0 or above
Visibility of the buy button High Above the fold on mobile
Stock indication High “Only 3 left” works better than “In stock”
Description Medium Key specifications plus answers to common questions

Technical factors:
– Page load speed: +1 second of delay → a 5–10% drop in CR
– A gallery that works correctly on mobile
– A visible price, with a note about instalments or delivery

Recommendations on the PDP: what they do for conversion

Recommendation blocks on a product page do not convert the current view directly. Their role is
different — keeping shoppers who were not convinced by the product in front of them.

Without recommendations: the shopper views the product → it is not right → they leave for a competitor.
With recommendations: the shopper views the product → it is not right → they follow “similar items” →
find the right one → buy.

The correct measure of this effect is the share of visits that ended in a purchase after a click on
a PDP widget
, not the conversion rate of the page itself.

Tip: separate the jobs of the blocks. “Similar products” is the alternative for a product that
did not fit (content-based, on attributes). “Frequently bought together” is cross-sell
(collaborative filtering on transactions). Mixing algorithms inside one block is worse than using
the right one for each job.

How to improve PDP CR

Priorities by effort-to-result ratio:

  1. Fill in the photography for the top 100 SKUs by traffic — this often produces a fast lift
  2. Set up review collection — a post-purchase message asking for a review
  3. Add social proof — view counters, “X people are viewing this now”
  4. Optimise the mobile page — the buy button must be visible without scrolling
  5. A/B test the description — structured specifications vs storytelling vs a plain feature list
