What Instant Checkout is

Instant Checkout is the ability to buy a product inside a ChatGPT conversation without going to the
merchant’s site. The shopper asks for a leather wallet as a gift under a given budget, ChatGPT
offers options, the shopper picks one and presses buy, and the order is placed.

OpenAI launched the feature in September 2025 in partnership with Stripe. The first supported
merchants were Etsy and over a million Shopify stores.

The mechanism: ACP and a shared payment token

Instant Checkout runs on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard built by OpenAI with
Stripe for secure transactions in agent scenarios.

The transaction flow:

1. The shopper stores payment details with OpenAI
2. The shopper confirms the purchase in ChatGPT
3. OpenAI generates a shared payment token
4. ChatGPT passes the token to the merchant through ACP
5. The merchant settles the transaction through Stripe
6. Card credentials are never exposed to the merchant

That differs fundamentally from an ordinary checkout: the merchant never sees the card details, so
a merchant breach cannot leak them.

What changed for retailers

Instant Checkout creates a new sales channel — not search, not direct, not a marketplace, but a
conversational entry point. Which means:

  • A shopper can buy without ever visiting the merchant’s site
  • Traditional search positions do not determine visibility inside ChatGPT
  • A new competitive surface appears: ranking inside the assistant’s shopping graph

Why it matters for agentic commerce

Instant Checkout is the first mass-market example of a transactional AI agent in commerce. Until
then, assistants helped people choose but did not buy. Now the agent acts as the intermediary
between an intent and a transaction.

Important: at launch the feature was available only to ChatGPT users in the United States.
Global rollout and support for local payment methods follow in later stages.

Implications for merchants

The arrival of Instant Checkout means retailers have to think about optimisation for AI-mediated
discovery alongside classical SEO. Machine-readable product data — structured markup, a high-quality
product feed — participation in the shopping graphs of AI platforms, and support for the commerce
protocols become competitive factors in their own right.
